    The spec for XmText states under the XmNeditMode resource:

    Specifies the set of keyboard bindings used in Text. The default,
    XmSINGLE_LINE_EDIT, provides the set of key bindings to be used in
    editing single-line text. XmMULTI_LINE_EDIT provides the set of
    key bindings to be used in editing multiline text.

    The results of placing a Text widget inside a ScrolledWindow when
    the Text's XmNeditMode is XmSINGLE_LINE_EDIT are undefined.

    The problem here is that when the XmNeditMode is set back to its
    original value (XmSINGLE_LINE_EDIT) is that it causes the scrolled
    window to shrink to accomodate a single line of text. Notice that
    the spec says that the results will be "undefined".
