    These tests fail if messages (via the write command) are not
    permitted by default.

    write will fail if the ouput terminal doesn't allow (mesg n)
    the messages. Since some systems may have 'mesg n' as the default,
    the test should call 'mesg y' prior to write for the correct exit
    value.
