Problem Text
This test may fail on implementations that do not consider referencing
an undefined mark an error.
ed test purpose 240 creates a mark in one file, and then edits another
file and verifies that the mark does not still exist.
This test assumes that an undefined mark used as an address is an
error. This is not true across all implementations, nor is this
required by standards. We believe the behavior in this case is
undefined.
On our implementation when a non-existant mark is used as an address,
that address defaults to 1 and the test fails.Test Output

We reluctantly agree this is a test suite deficiency in the test
suite version(s) listed.
The current spec is silent about the results of using an
undefined mark as part of a command.
POSIX.2b section 4.20.7.2(4) clarifies the usage of marks in
addressing. It states:
The apostrophe-x character pair ('x) shall address the line marked
with the mark name character x, which shall be a lowercase letter
from the portable character set or one of the characters backquote
(`) or apostrophe ('). It shall be an error if the character has
not been set to mark a line, or if the line that was marked is
not currently present in the edit buffer, or the mark has not been
set. Lines can be marked by the k command.
