Problem Summary |
PG4C.00062 Should the ps -l heading require the specified fields? |
Problem Text |
The XPG4 format is stated as: F S UID PID PPID C PRI NI ADDR SZ WCHAN TTY TIME CMD The current format is as follows: F S UID PID PPID C PRI NI P SZ:RSS WCHAN TTY TIME CMD The specification doesn't clarify "the address of the process" which means it is certainly open to interpretation (phy addr, /proc addr, etc) nor do I see a real use for it. Whats crazy is that although they want various fields, they don't spec what's in the fields. I don't see how they can check for any STDOUT usage Note that POSIX is rationale on this point - for POSIX, if the -o options isn't specified, the output is implementation specified. (-o lets one spec a format much like for date(1)). Note also that XPG says that SZ is in blocks on one page and in Kilobytes on the next.

Review Response |
We recommend this request be refused. The standard states in the STDOUT section of the ps utility, When the -o option is not specified, the standard output format is as follows. The column headings and descriptions of the columns in a ps listing are given below. The precise meanings of these fields are implementation-dependent. Although the information associated with each field is implementation-dependent, the standard requires specific headings to appear in the output. The test only attempts to check the heading content required by the standard.
